The English along with Welsh Drawn Together for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by rugby icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England together with Wales have been drawn in the same group for the World Cup in 2027, promising a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw echoes their memorable clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at Twickenham contributed to the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Draws

The Irish alongside the Scots have likewise been drawn in a group once again, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, Ireland secured a convincing victory, with Scotland unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each impressed as underdogs in France, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from defending champions and world number one South Africa until the final, assuming the Springboks top their assigned pool.

Tournament Ramifications

If the groups conclude in line with the current world rankings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both the English and the Irish until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts Australia find themselves together with their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture aimed at launch the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have drawn Italy, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the twenty who took part in France.

This edition will feature a last-16 round for the first time in the competition's history.

While the winner of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six group winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
