Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such medications must be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
